The Nigeria Labour Congress has appealed to the Federal Government to discontinue policies it believes are worsening economic hardship, insecurity and poverty among Nigerians.
In a message released to commemorate the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebration, NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said the festive period should encourage leaders to reflect deeply on how government decisions are affecting ordinary citizens.

He stated that workers and low-income Nigerians were suffering heavily under what he described as market-driven economic reforms, adding that governance should place citizens’ wellbeing above political gains and profit-making interests.
Ajaero urged authorities at every level to prioritise the protection of lives and property while ensuring access to essential needs such as affordable food, housing, healthcare, education and sustainable employment opportunities.
The labour leader expressed concern over the growing insecurity in the country, saying many citizens now live in fear due to rising cases of kidnappings, violent attacks and general unrest.
According to him, the increasing wave of insecurity — ranging from bandit attacks and abductions to violent clashes and urban crime — reflects serious shortcomings in the nation’s system of governance.
He also faulted political office holders for asking citizens to endure sacrifices while many leaders continue to enjoy comfortable lifestyles, insisting that true leadership requires honesty and visible commitment to improving living conditions.
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Ajaero warned that Nigerian workers and the wider population would hold politicians responsible for broken promises and the prevailing economic difficulties.
He stressed that the 2027 polls should not become another cycle of manipulation by the political elite, but rather an opportunity for accountability and change.
The NLC president further encouraged Nigerians to use the Eid-el-Kabir season not only for spiritual reflection and prayers, but also for civic engagement, community mobilisation and resistance against policies considered harmful to public welfare.
He reaffirmed that the labour movement would continue pushing for reforms that encourage social equity, economic justice and better living standards for workers and vulnerable citizens.
Ajaero, however, extended warm Eid-el-Kabir greetings to Muslims nationwide and called for unity and resilience amid the country’s economic and security difficulties.
