A tragic boat accident in Jigawa State has left one person dead and 39 others unaccounted for after a wooden canoe conveying farmers and farm workers overturned in the Malamawar Yan Dutse area of Ringim Local Government Area.
The incident happened on Sunday evening as the passengers were crossing a river on their way to agricultural fields. The accident immediately triggered a search-and-rescue mission involving security personnel and local emergency teams.

According to the Jigawa State Police Command, officers, local divers, and other first responders were mobilised after authorities received an emergency alert. So far, one body has been recovered, while rescue efforts continue in search of the remaining passengers. Many of those still missing are believed to be women travelling to engage in farming activities.
Officials said the exact cause of the boat accident has not yet been determined, adding that investigations are ongoing. The latest incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with water transport in many rural communities across northern Nigeria, where boats remain a vital means of travel despite frequent accidents.
