Co-host nation Mexico became the first side to book a place in the World Cup knockout rounds after edging South Korea 1-0 before an ecstatic crowd at Guadalajara Stadium on Thursday.
Following a lackluster opening half, Mexico broke the deadlock shortly after the restart when Luis Romo capitalized on a goalkeeping mistake to score the decisive goal. The victory guaranteed Mexico top spot in Group A with one group match still remaining.

Goalkeeper Raul Rangel played a crucial role late in the game, producing a remarkable double save in the closing moments to protect Mexico’s slender advantage.
By finishing first in the group, Mexico will remain on home soil for the Round of 32, where they will face one of the tournament’s third-placed qualifiers in Mexico City.
Head coach Javier Aguirre admitted the emotional pressure surrounding the match was significant.
“It’s never easy managing the emotions in a game like this,” Aguirre said.
The veteran coach singled out Rangel’s heroics and praised the passionate support from the Guadalajara crowd.
“His save was absolutely incredible,” Aguirre said.
“It was a very tactical contest and perhaps not the easiest match for spectators to enjoy, but the fans were exceptional.
“I want to thank them for their support. Since we arrived, they have been fantastic.
“Everywhere you looked, there were Mexico shirts. The city was covered in green.”
South Korea remain second in the group on three points, while the Czech Republic and South Africa are still in contention with one point each.
Hong Myung-bo’s team will next face South Africa and remain well positioned to secure progression to the knockout rounds.
