Speaking at the ceremony, Elumelu, an alumnus of UNILAG, described the project as both strategic and symbolic.
According to him, returning to his alma mater for the unveiling made the occasion especially significant, noting that universities remain centres for innovation, ideas, and future leadership. He said the investment reflects UBA’s confidence in young people and in the role institutions such as UNILAG will continue to play in shaping Africa’s future.
He further stated that the bank’s philosophy of empowering individuals and strengthening institutions remains a key part of its growth strategy across the continent.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Folasade Ogunsola, praised UBA for sustaining a relationship built on innovation, impact, and institutional support, while describing Elumelu as “a son of the university.”
The newly inaugurated four-storey facility is designed to serve as a collaborative hub linking academia and industry. UBA will operate a dedicated business office within the complex to provide banking services, financial advisory support, enterprise solutions, and engagement opportunities for students, staff, and the wider university community. Other sections of the building will be utilised for broader institutional purposes by the university.
Also addressing guests at the event, Alawuba said the Innovation Hub and Business Office represent a deliberate investment in talent development, entrepreneurship, and future economic growth.
He explained that the facility would give students and the university community access to innovation support, networks, ideas, and financial services aimed at unlocking opportunities and preparing future leaders for an evolving global environment.
