The Cross River State Government has dismissed as inaccurate a media report suggesting that 10 additional individuals in the state are showing symptoms of COVID-19, clarifying that only one confirmed case exists.
In a statement released on Thursday, the State Commissioner for Health, Henry Egbe Ayuk, said the report misrepresented the current public health situation.

He reiterated that, as announced during a press briefing in Calabar on April 21, 2026, the state still has just one confirmed case, with no new infections recorded.
Ayuk explained that the individuals mentioned in the report are simply contacts of the confirmed case, identified through routine contact tracing. He emphasized that they are neither confirmed nor suspected cases, as none has shown symptoms associated with the virus.
He further clarified that contacts are individuals who have had close interaction with a confirmed case, while suspected cases are those displaying symptoms consistent with COVID-19. Confirmed cases, he added, are those verified through laboratory testing.
According to him, all identified contacts have been placed under home isolation and are being closely monitored by health officials in line with standard preventive measures.
The state government urged the public to ignore the report, describing it as misleading and capable of causing unnecessary panic.
Reaffirming its commitment to openness, the Ministry of Health assured residents that any updates on the state’s COVID-19 status would be promptly communicated through official channels. Residents were also advised to remain calm and continue observing basic safety measures, as there is no cause for alarm.
