A brilliant goal from Julian Quinones and a second-half header by Raul Jimenez guided Mexico to a comfortable 2-0 victory over South Africa in their opening Group A match of the World Cup at Estadio Azteca. The contest saw three players dismissed as the hosts began their campaign on a winning note.
Mexico took the lead early in the encounter when a defensive mistake by Sphephelo Sithole allowed Erik Lira to regain possession and feed Quinones, who fired an emphatic shot past the goalkeeper to ignite celebrations among the home supporters in Mexico City.

South Africa’s chances of mounting a comeback suffered a major setback shortly after halftime when Sithole received a red card for a challenge on Brian Gutierrez. Although Jimenez was unable to capitalize from the resulting free kick, he extended Mexico’s advantage in the 67th minute with a well-placed header at the back post.
The visitors were reduced to nine men in the 84th minute after midfielder Themba Zwane was sent off for violent conduct. Mexico also ended the match with 10 players after defender Cesar Montes was shown a red card during stoppage time.
Mexico will next take on South Korea in Guadalajara on Thursday, while South Africa are set to face the Czech Republic in their second group-stage fixture.
