The decision was taken by the GFA Executive Council following extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders. Queiroz is expected to steer Ghana’s preparations and campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Queiroz arrives with vast international pedigree. Over the years, he has guided South Africa to qualification for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, led Portugal to the Round of 16 at the 2010 edition, and managed Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 tournaments. His coaching résumé also includes stints with national teams such as Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar.
The veteran coach, who has also handled top clubs including Real Madrid and Manchester United, is widely regarded for his tactical organisation and experience at the highest level of the game.
He is expected to assume duty immediately as Ghana intensifies preparations for the tournament, which begins on June 11, 2026.
The Black Stars have been drawn in a challenging group and will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, 2026, in Toronto, Canada, before facing England and Croatia in their remaining group-stage matches
