The Federal Government has announced a significant increase in annual admissions into nursing schools across the country, raising the intake from about 20,000 to 50,000 students.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed the development, describing it as a major step towards tackling Nigeria’s shortage of healthcare professionals and strengthening the nation’s health workforce.

According to the minister, the expansion is part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to improve the capacity of the country’s healthcare system by producing more qualified nurses to meet growing local and international demand.
Dr. Alausa said the increase in admissions reflects the government’s commitment to investing in healthcare education and ensuring that more Nigerians have access to quality training in the nursing profession.
He noted that the initiative is expected to help bridge the gap in the country’s health sector, where shortages of skilled personnel have continued to pose challenges to effective service delivery.
The minister added that expanding nursing education will not only improve healthcare services across Nigeria but also create more opportunities for young Nigerians seeking careers in the medical profession.
