Elias emerged during the commission’s 77th session held in Geneva, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Phoebe Okowa for the remainder of the tenure ending December 31, 2027.
In a statement issued by Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City, Ibrahim said the election reflects Nigeria’s growing relevance and renewed participation in international diplomacy.
According to him, Nigeria’s return to prominence within the United Nations system is already yielding positive outcomes.
The International Law Commission, established by the UN General Assembly in 1947, is responsible for advancing and codifying international law.
The body develops legal principles and frameworks covering areas such as state responsibility, immunity, and other issues guiding relations among nations.
Ibrahim expressed optimism that the Tinubu administration would continue to record more diplomatic achievements in the global arena.
He added that additional successes should be expected within his first 90 days in office as Nigeria’s envoy to the UN.
The diplomat also disclosed that the development had been formally communicated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
In a letter dated May 5, the chairman of the International Law Commission, Andreas Mavroyiannis, officially informed Elias of his election into the commission.
The letter conveyed congratulations on behalf of the commission and confirmed that Elias would serve out the remaining tenure ending in December 2027.
