Former Kano State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, has officially withdrawn from the Peoples Democratic Party, citing a deliberate shift in his political direction.
In a resignation letter dated April 19, 2026, and addressed to the PDP chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano, Shekarau stated that his departure takes effect immediately.
“Kindly accept this as formal notice of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party with immediate effect,” he wrote.

The former minister explained that his decision came after broad consultations with members of his political bloc, noting that plans were underway to align with another political platform.
“This move is the outcome of wide-ranging discussions within my political group as we seek to continue our journey under a different party,” he said.
Shekarau also expressed gratitude to party leaders at the grassroots level, commending their leadership and offering prayers for continued guidance.
“I appreciate your leadership and pray that Allah grants you wisdom in your responsibilities,” he added.
Copies of the letter were also sent to the PDP leadership at both the state and local government levels, signaling formal communication across party structures.
His exit follows months of speculation amid ongoing internal challenges within the PDP.
Earlier in April, during a visit by APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, Shekarau had hinted at his possible departure, describing the PDP as weakened by internal divisions.
He told APC leaders that consultations regarding his next political move were nearly complete, stressing that his decisions would be guided by the interests of Kano State.
“My associates, including members of the Shura Council, are focused on a Kano-first agenda. Wherever Kano’s interests are best served is where we will align,” he said.
