Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, has appointed actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his official spokesperson.
Okonkwo disclosed the development in a statement shared on his verified X account on Thursday, thanking Atiku for entrusting him with the responsibility.

He said the appointment reflects Atiku’s leadership approach, describing him as a leader who embraces consultation and inclusiveness rather than reacting negatively to differing opinions.
“Instead of taking offence when associates express sincere concerns over certain decisions, His Excellency consistently chooses dialogue and compromise that lead to lasting solutions,” Okonkwo said.
He explained that engagements with Atiku and other senior ADC figures focused on protecting the political interests of the South-East within the limits of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the prevailing political environment.
“During discussions with His Excellency and other committed members of the African Democratic Congress, the interests of the South-East were carefully considered and safeguarded despite the constraints of the Electoral Act, 2026, and existing political realities,” he stated.
Okonkwo also acknowledged the support of Dr. Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu, and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Dr. Ekene Onwuka, for their efforts in strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He further expressed appreciation to his family, friends and supporters for their unwavering encouragement and prayers.
“I continue to seek your prayers for wisdom, courage, divine provision and protection as I undertake this demanding assignment in pursuit of a better and greater Nigeria,” he added.
The appointment comes only weeks after Okonkwo openly questioned the ADC’s reported plans regarding its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
He had maintained that selecting a running mate from the South-South would worsen what he described as the continued political exclusion of the South-East, noting that the region has not produced either a president or vice president since 1999.
Despite his reservations, the ADC later announced former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate after the former vice president secured the party’s presidential ticket.
