Although the exact cause of death had not been made public at the time of reporting, Oyewo had previously spoken about his health struggles. In April 2026, the veteran actor revealed that he had been battling an enlarged prostate, a condition that significantly affected his career and limited his appearances on screen.
During a visit by Kunle Afod to his residence, Oyewo discussed how the illness reduced his ability to take on physically demanding acting roles, forcing him to scale back his involvement in film productions.
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Kola Oyewo began his journey in the performing arts in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group. Over the years, he rose to become one of the most respected and influential figures in Yoruba theatre and Nigerian cinema.
He gained widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s iconic stage play, The Gods Are Not to Blame, a performance that earned him recognition across Africa’s theatre landscape.
Across a remarkable career spanning more than six decades, Oyewo appeared in numerous acclaimed productions, including Saworoide, Sango, Koseegbe, Super Story, and several Yoruba-language films that played a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s movie industry.
Beyond his achievements as an actor, Oyewo was a distinguished scholar. He obtained a PhD in Drama from the University of Ibadan and lectured at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University, and Elizade University.
Through decades of teaching, mentoring, and artistic excellence, Dr. Kola Oyewo nurtured countless actors, dramatists, and academics, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Nigeria’s theatre, film, and educational communities.
