Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested a passenger found in possession of 36 live cartridges during a routine stop-and-search operation in Benin City.
The command’s spokesperson, Ino Ikoedem, revealed this in a statement issued on Thursday.

According to her, the incident occurred when police officers intercepted a commercial minibus carrying seven passengers at Guobadia Junction along the Benin–Auchi Road.
She explained that some passengers allegedly abandoned their bags and attempted to escape immediately they noticed the presence of security operatives, prompting officers to pursue them.
Ikoedem stated, “On May 23, 2026, at about 1:00 p.m., officers attached to the Ikpoba Hill Area Command, while carrying out stop-and-search duties at Guobadia Junction on the Benin–Auchi Road, intercepted a minibus transporting seven passengers from the Benin–Auchi Bypass to Ring Road in Benin City.
“During the operation, three male passengers suddenly dropped their belongings and fled the scene.”
She added that the officers immediately chased the fleeing suspects and succeeded in arresting one of them, identified as 36-year-old Richard Gabriel from Ovia South-West Local Government Area of Edo State.
The police spokesperson disclosed that a search conducted on the suspect’s bag led to the discovery of 36 rounds of live cartridges hidden inside.
She further said the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, praised the officers for their alertness and professionalism, while reaffirming the command’s determination to fight criminal activities and protect residents across the state.
“A thorough search of the suspect’s bag resulted in the recovery of 36 live cartridges concealed within it,” she said.
“The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, commends the vigilance and dedication of the officers involved in the operation and assures members of the public of the command’s continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property throughout Edo State.”
The command also arrested two suspected cult members and recovered a firearm after police operatives disrupted a gathering in Ohonre community.
