Suspected gunmen launched a late-night assault on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, near Jos, Plateau State, on Monday, killing three security operatives and causing widespread panic within the institution and surrounding communities.
The attack reportedly occurred around 11:40 p.m. when the assailants stormed the institute and opened fire on security personnel stationed at the main entrance.

Security operatives on duty engaged the attackers in a fierce exchange of gunfire, successfully preventing them from breaching the facility.
Sources within the institute and eyewitnesses said three members of the security team, including a police officer, lost their lives during the confrontation.
A staff member, who requested anonymity, described the incident as frightening and chaotic.
“I was asleep when the shooting started. Initially, I thought it was something minor, but it soon became clear that the institute was under attack. There was fear and confusion everywhere,” the source recounted.
Residents living around the area also reported hearing prolonged gunfire, which heightened anxiety among members of the community.
Additional security reinforcements were later deployed to the scene, forcing the attackers to retreat before gaining access to the institute.
Authorities said the prompt intervention of security personnel helped avert what could have been a more serious breach of the facility.
Confirming the incident, the Plateau State Police Command said three security operatives were killed during the attack.
“The Plateau State Police Command confirms the incident involving security personnel on duty at NIPSS, Kuru. Sadly, three security operatives lost their lives in the course of the attack,” the command stated.
Police authorities added that security had been strengthened around the institution and that the situation had been brought under control.
“The environment is calm, security presence has been reinforced, and normal activities have resumed. Investigations are ongoing,” the statement added.
Management of National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies also acknowledged the incident, assuring staff, participants and the public that there was no immediate threat to the institution.
According to the institute, security agencies responded swiftly to contain the situation and have since commenced investigations into the attack.
“The incident was quickly brought under control through the rapid intervention of security personnel. There is currently no danger to staff, participants or the institute’s facilities,” NIPSS said.
As Nigeria’s foremost policy research and leadership training institution, NIPSS is regarded as a strategic national asset, making the attack a matter of significant security concern.
Security agencies are continuing efforts to identify those responsible for the assault and uncover the motive behind the attack.
