The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has resigned from her position.
Her exit makes her the third member of the Federal Executive Council to step down following President Bola Tinubu’s directive requiring appointees intending to contest elective offices in 2027 to vacate their positions.

Onyejeocha announced her resignation in a letter shared on her social media platforms on Friday, three days after the March 31 deadline set by the president.
However, she did not reveal the specific office she plans to seek in the 2027 elections.
“It is with a heart full of gratitude that I announce my resignation as Honourable Minister of State for Labour and Employment,” she wrote.
She expressed appreciation to the president, members of the Federal Executive Council, and Nigerians for the opportunity to serve.
“This decision comes with deep gratitude to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the privilege of serving in his administration,” she stated.
Describing her tenure as a significant chapter in her public service journey, Onyejeocha noted that her resignation marks not an end but the beginning of a new phase.
“I remain committed to service, progress, and building the Nigeria we all deserve. Thank you, and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” she added.
She also commended staff of the ministry for their “dedication, professionalism, and partnership,” highlighting their contributions to strengthening workers’ rights, improving workplace safety, and expanding employment opportunities.
The former lawmaker, who represented the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2023, further thanked her constituents for their continued support.
Her resignation follows similar moves by the Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, who stepped down to pursue the Gombe State governorship, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, who also resigned to contest the Bauchi State governorship race.
