European Council President Antonio Costa has welcomed a newly announced agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at bringing an end to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, stating that the European Union stands ready to support efforts toward achieving sustainable peace in the region.
In a post shared on X on Monday, Costa expressed optimism about the development, saying he anticipated the conclusion of the costly conflict and the restoration of unrestricted maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States and Iran announced that they had reached a broad agreement designed to halt hostilities across multiple fronts in the Middle East, including Lebanon, and facilitate the reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. However, both sides provided limited information regarding the sensitive issue of Iran’s nuclear programme.
According to officials in Washington and Islamabad, the agreement is expected to be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday. The planned signing is being viewed as a significant diplomatic milestone that could help end months of fighting that have claimed thousands of lives and disrupted global energy markets.
Although many aspects of the deal remain undisclosed, US President Donald Trump confirmed that the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for international oil shipments, would reopen once the agreement is signed.
Announcing the development on Truth Social on Sunday, as he celebrated his 80th birthday, Trump declared that negotiations with Iran had been successfully concluded.
“The agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now finalised,” Trump wrote.
He further stated that he had authorised the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz without tolls and approved the immediate lifting of the United States naval blockade.
“Congratulations to everyone. Ships around the world can resume passage, and the flow of oil can continue uninterrupted,” the US president said.
