Dangote Cement Plc has announced an ambitious sustainability roadmap aimed at cutting its net carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions intensity by 20 per cent while increasing its installed production capacity to 80 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by 2030.
Speaking during the company’s 17th Annual General Meeting in Lagos, Chairman of Dangote Cement, Mr. Emmanuel Ikazoboh, presented the 2025 Sustainability Scorecard, explaining that sustainability has grown beyond a regulatory obligation to become a key driver of business growth, resilience and long-term value creation across Africa.

As part of its decarbonisation strategy, the company approved measures in 2024 to further reduce its carbon emissions by 20 per cent while fast-tracking the adoption of cleaner transportation systems.
Ikazoboh disclosed that by 2027, all fleet trucks operating across Nigeria, except those at the Gboko plant, would run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), with the rollout of electric trucks expected to begin in 2026.
The cement manufacturer also revealed plans to reinforce its status as Africa’s leading cement exporter by expanding port facilities in Apapa, Onne and Lekki. It added that ongoing expansion projects, including planned operations in Botswana and Zimbabwe, would raise installed production capacity to 80MTPA by 2030.
According to the company, the initiatives align with the Dangote Group’s Vision 2030, which seeks to establish a globally competitive industrial enterprise driven by sustainability and innovation.
On its people-focused sustainability agenda, Dangote Cement reported notable progress in workforce development and community impact. It said 625 direct green jobs were created across its operations, while social investment spending increased by 56 per cent. Graduate trainee recruitment also rose by 74 per cent, reflecting the company’s commitment to developing future African industrial professionals.
To support this objective, the company said it invested N2.1 billion in employee training and capacity building as part of efforts to position itself as an employer of choice across its operating countries by promoting an inclusive, high-performance work environment.
Providing updates on its environmental performance, Dangote Cement stated that it recorded measurable improvements in reducing its carbon footprint, achieving a 6.5 per cent decline in CO₂ emissions intensity compared to its 2021 baseline. It also reported a 1.7 per cent improvement in energy efficiency, a 4 per cent reduction in overall energy consumption, and an 8 per cent drop in water usage during the review period.
On governance, the company said it strengthened its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) framework through the introduction of an Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Policy, a Biodiversity Policy and a Disability Inclusion Policy. It also incorporated 297 local vendors into its ESG-driven supply chain programme.
Addressing shareholders, Ikazoboh said the company’s sustainability governance has advanced considerably over the past decade, with executive accountability, climate risk oversight and ESG performance now fully integrated into strategic planning and day-to-day operations.
Speaking on circular economy and biodiversity, he highlighted the expansion of the DangCircular initiative, which focuses on waste reduction, recycling and sustainable resource management across the company’s operations.
He disclosed that the company co-processed more than 437,000 tonnes of waste as alternative fuel, reducing reliance on fossil fuels while improving operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.
Dangote Cement also reflected on its sustainability journey, noting that it began in 2017 with the introduction of the Dangote Seven Sustainability Pillars and the adoption of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reporting framework.
Since then, the company said it has implemented sustainability champion programmes, executive ESG accountability systems, climate disclosure initiatives, alternative fuel projects, biodiversity restoration programmes and company-wide sustainability policies that have embedded ESG principles across its operations.
According to Dangote Cement, its sustainability strategy delivers long-term business value by ensuring workforce development supports industrial expansion, climate priorities shape investment decisions, governance strengthens organisational resilience and environmental conservation safeguards future growth.
