The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, is set to resign from his position after obtaining President Bola Tinubu’s approval to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
The decision followed a meeting between Adelabu and the President on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where the minister presented a detailed account of his performance in the power sector over the past two and a half years.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, a key highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and its accompanying Strategic Implementation Plan.
Adelabu reportedly outlined major achievements recorded during his tenure, including efforts to stabilise electricity generation, improve transmission capacity, and implement reforms aimed at boosting efficiency and service delivery across the power sector value chain.
The statement indicated that the minister would soon vacate office.
“In view of this development, Chief Adebayo Adelabu is expected to resign his position as Minister of Power in the coming days,” it stated.
Tunji explained that the timing of the planned resignation is intended to ensure continuity in ongoing reforms.
“The timing reflects his commitment to addressing critical sector challenges and ensuring stability in ongoing reforms before exiting office. This includes efforts to stabilise the sector following recent drops in power generation caused by gas supply constraints to power plants, pipeline repairs, and outstanding payments to gas suppliers. It also involves securing the President’s approval for his resignation and governorship ambition in Oyo State,” he said.
He noted that President Tinubu had earlier directed all political appointees with electoral ambitions to resign on or before March 31.
The statement added that during the meeting, Adelabu gave a comprehensive overview of his stewardship.
“He highlighted key milestones achieved under his leadership, including improvements in electricity generation, enhanced transmission infrastructure, and reforms designed to strengthen efficiency and service delivery across the power sector,” it said.
It further noted that another major aspect of the engagement was the presentation of both the NIEP and the Medium- to Long-Term Integrated Resource Plan for the power sector, aimed at ensuring sustainability and continuity.
Explaining the policy, the statement said, “The NIEP is a comprehensive framework designed to guide the sustainable development of Nigeria’s electricity sector. It outlines a long-term roadmap for achieving energy security, expanding access to electricity, integrating renewable energy, and building a more resilient and efficient power system.”
President Tinubu, according to the statement, commended the minister for his commitment and achievements, particularly in laying a solid policy foundation for the sector’s transformation.
“The President praised the minister’s dedication and the progress recorded, especially in establishing a strong policy framework for the power sector. He also granted his approval and support for the minister’s governorship ambition,” Tunji added.
Adelabu, in turn, expressed gratitude to the President for his continued support and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing Nigeria’s power sector and overall national development.
