The Abia State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has confirmed the release of kidnapped orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Uche Bonaventure Aguocha, who was abducted on Sunday, May 26, 2026.
The announcement was made in a statement jointly signed by the state NMA Chairman, Dr Ezenwa Ezuruike, and the Secretary, Dr Clement Ifenkoronye, on June 2, 2026.

The association had earlier threatened to commence an indefinite industrial action beginning Tuesday, June 2, in protest against the abduction of the medical practitioner.
However, the statement revealed that Dr Aguocha, a former chairman of the NMA in Abia State, regained his freedom on Tuesday after spending nine days in captivity.
Following his release, the association announced the suspension of the planned total and indefinite strike across the state.
The NMA expressed gratitude to God for preserving the doctor’s life and ensuring his safe reunion with his family, colleagues and patients.
Part of the statement read: “The Association sincerely appreciates the efforts of the Abia State Government under Governor Alex Otti, the Imo State Government led by Governor Hope Uzodimma, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies whose interventions contributed to securing his freedom.
“We also thank members of the public, media organisations and healthcare workers for their prayers, support and continued advocacy throughout this difficult period.
“While we welcome this positive development, Congress strongly maintains that the abduction of healthcare professionals is unacceptable and should never become a recurring trend. The persistent targeting of doctors, including the unresolved case involving Prof. Iweha since 2020, continues to negatively affect healthcare services and weaken the morale of medical professionals already working under challenging conditions.
“The NMA Abia State branch therefore urges both the Federal and State Governments to urgently strengthen security around healthcare personnel and medical facilities. We also demand a comprehensive investigation to ensure those behind this crime are identified, arrested and prosecuted to discourage future occurrences.
“The Association remains dedicated to serving the people of Abia State and will continue engaging relevant authorities and security agencies to ensure a safe and conducive working environment for doctors.
“We wish Dr Aguocha quick recovery from the emotional and physical trauma caused by the incident.”
