The Women and Modesty Global Initiative was formally unveiled in a colourful and well-attended ceremony that brought together prominent women leaders, youth mentors, educators, community influencers, faith-based leaders, and development partners. The event centered on the theme, “The Girl Child and Modesty,” highlighting the importance of nurturing positive values among young girls.
The launch served as a vital forum for engaging conversations on character building, self-esteem, dignity, and ethical conduct, particularly in today’s rapidly evolving and highly interconnected society.
Held at the Sobanjo Multimedia Centre of Excellence, University of Lagos, Yaba, the programme was expertly hosted by Dr. Champion and Amb. Cornell Idofia. Proceedings commenced with the singing of the Nigerian National Anthem.
In her keynote address, the Founder of the Women and Modesty Global Initiative, Amb. Mrs. Emelda Ahunna Osuji, underscored the importance of equipping girls with the knowledge, confidence, and mentorship needed to make informed life choices while preserving their values and sense of identity.
She explained that modesty extends beyond outward appearance, describing it as a reflection of integrity, discipline, respect, good character, and responsible self-expression.
“Our vision is to nurture a generation of confident, responsible, and purpose-driven girls who recognize their value and make meaningful contributions to society,” she stated.
The event featured inspiring keynote speeches, mentorship sessions, and goodwill messages from distinguished personalities who shared valuable perspectives on parenting, education, leadership, digital citizenship, and the collective responsibility of society in safeguarding and empowering the girl child.
Among the notable personalities in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Christian Egbeji, Chief Victor Chukwura and Lolo, Mr. and Barrister Steven Ochije, Ajia Memunat Dosu, Christ Ezeoguine Ogene Na Umuchu, veteran Nollywood actress Ngozi Nwosu, and Nigerian-born Canada-based actress, producer, and director Amanda Ebeye, among several others. Some of the distinguished guests were also honoured with awards in recognition of their outstanding contributions to society.
Participants drew attention to the numerous challenges confronting young girls today, including peer pressure, cyberbullying, abuse, exploitation, and harmful social influences. They emphasized the need to create supportive and secure environments that enable girls to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally.
A major highlight of the occasion was a special award presentation recognizing women who have made remarkable contributions in the areas of education, youth mentorship, moral development, and community service. Their accomplishments were celebrated as examples worthy of emulation by the younger generation.
The programme also showcased cultural displays, motivational performances, and interactive engagements designed to inspire participants to embrace positive values and become advocates of modesty within their communities.
Speakers and stakeholders at the event called for stronger partnerships among families, educational institutions, religious organizations, government agencies, and civil society groups to ensure that every girl has access to the guidance, opportunities, and support needed to realize her full potential.
As the Women and Modesty Global Initiative embarks on its mission, organizers expressed confidence that the movement will leave a lasting legacy through advocacy programmes, mentorship initiatives, educational campaigns, and community-based activities aimed at empowering women and protecting the future of the girl child.
The launch concluded with a renewed pledge by participants to champion character development, dignity, and responsible leadership among young girls. The consensus was clear: a modest, confident, and empowered girl child is not only an asset to her family and community but also a powerful force for societal transformation.
Speaking with journalists at the event, the Acting Chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Lagos Chapter, Hon. High Chief Iredu Ikubajeluwa Fumilayomi Redo, commended the convener, fondly known as “Madam Modesty,” for her dedication and vision in championing the cause of women and girls.
She reaffirmed the commitment of the Actors Guild of Nigeria to supporting initiatives that promote the welfare, empowerment, and advancement of women and the girl child.
“This initiative resonates strongly with our values and objectives. As a project driven by an NGO, it presents a valuable opportunity for partnership. The Actors Guild of Nigeria is ready to work closely with the organizers to expand awareness and strengthen its impact. In fact, we are already collaborating to ensure the message reaches a broader audience and gains the recognition it deserves,” she said.
