Alexia Putellas
Spain moved to the summit of Group C in the race for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after a commanding 4-0 victory over England, denying the Lionesses an opportunity to seal qualification.
A brilliant performance from Alexia Putellas, who scored twice, proved decisive as the world champions outclassed England. Patri Guijarro opened the scoring before substitute Claudia Pina added the finishing touch late on to complete an emphatic win.

Spain took control from the outset and deservedly broke the deadlock in the 19th minute. Mariona Caldentey won possession from Lucy Bronze before Guijarro surged forward, evaded Georgia Stanway’s challenge and fired a precise long-range effort into the bottom corner.
The hosts continued to dominate and created several chances to extend their advantage. Putellas and Lucia Corrales both came close before the former eventually doubled Spain’s lead. Caldentey threaded a pass through to Putellas, whose effort was parried by goalkeeper Hannah Hampton but still found its way into the net.
Spain struck again shortly after the restart. Bronze managed to clear Putellas’ initial attempt off the line and onto the post, but the Barcelona star reacted quickest to the rebound and slotted home her second goal of the evening.
England struggled to respond, with Stanway’s effort from the edge of the area drifting narrowly wide in one of the visitors’ few attacking moments.
The result was put beyond doubt late in the contest when substitutes Aitana Bonmati and Claudia Pina combined brilliantly, with Pina finishing clinically to make it 4-0 and send Spain top of the standings on goal difference with one match remaining.
The victory carried extra significance for Spain, who had lost their previous two meetings against England, including the Euro 2025 final. The comprehensive triumph not only strengthened their qualification hopes but also delivered a major psychological boost should the two sides meet again on the global stage.
Sonia Bermudez’s side were dominant in every department, generating 21 shots and an expected goals (xG) tally of 3.52, while limiting England to just three attempts throughout the match. None of the Lionesses’ efforts tested the goalkeeper, producing an xG of only 0.21.
Putellas was the standout performer, registering a game-high six shots and creating three chances. Caldentey also played a key role, leading the creativity charts with five chances created.
There was further encouragement for Spain with the return of Bonmati, who made her first appearance since suffering a leg fracture late in 2025. The midfielder marked her comeback with an assist, although breaking into the starting lineup could prove difficult given the excellent form of Putellas, Guijarro and Caldentey.
For England, the heavy defeat represents a significant setback. Rather than securing automatic qualification, the Lionesses now face the strong possibility of having to navigate the play-off route to reach the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
