The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a warning to Nigerians over a fraudulent social media post advertising a so-called free portal for correcting National Identification Number (NIN) records.
The alert was contained in a public notice shared on the commission’s official X account on Tuesday.

In the advisory, NIMC described the message and the links attached to it as a phishing attempt designed to deceive individuals and harvest their personal data.
The commission urged members of the public to ignore the post completely and avoid opening any suspicious links claiming to offer free updates or modifications of NIN information.
It clarified that all corrections or updates to NIN details must only be processed through its authorised self-service platform, accessible via the official NIMC website.
NIMC further advised Nigerians to depend strictly on its verified communication channels for accurate information regarding enrolment, data modification and other identity management services.
According to the commission, the circulating online portal has no affiliation with NIMC and should be disregarded.
It also reassured citizens that the National Identity Database remains secure and fully protected from unauthorised access.
“We assure the public that the National Identity Database is safe and well secured,” the commission stated.
NIMC encouraged Nigerians to stay alert and avoid interacting with unverified or suspicious online links.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding citizens’ identity information and maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s identity management system.
It also called on the public to report any fake websites, messages or online activities falsely claiming to represent the commission to the relevant authorities.
