The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recovered 380 rounds of military-grade ammunition in Kaduna State and apprehended a husband and wife allegedly connected to the possession of more than 1.2 tonnes of cannabis.
The agency disclosed the development on Sunday through its Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, who outlined a series of successful operations carried out across different states.
According to Babafemi, NDLEA operatives conducting routine patrols along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway near Jere on May 24 intercepted a 30-year-old suspect, Sunusi Musa, who was allegedly transporting 380 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition destined for Katsina State.
He said the suspect, along with the recovered ammunition, had been transferred to the relevant security authorities for further investigation and prosecution.
Babafemi further revealed that operatives in Kaduna arrested a couple, Musa Sunday and Mercy Sunday, as well as another suspect, Salomi Ezekiel, aged 38, after discovering 100 large sacks of skunk weighing a total of 1,246 kilograms at a residence in the Gonin Gora area.
He noted that the operation was part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to dismantle drug distribution networks across the country.
In another breakthrough, NDLEA officers uncovered shipments of hard drugs concealed inside water purification machines imported from the Netherlands.
The illicit substances, consisting of three kilograms of ketamine and 199 grams of MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, were intercepted at a courier facility in Lagos on May 26.
Babafemi explained that the drugs had been carefully hidden within the machines in an attempt to evade detection but were successfully identified and seized by operatives.
Meanwhile, in Niger State, intelligence-led operations led NDLEA personnel to a warehouse in Gidan Kukah, located in Bosso Local Government Area, where 457 kilograms of skunk were recovered on May 27.
Following the raid, officers arrested 46-year-old Godwin Zakka at his residence in the Gbeganu area of Minna in connection with the seized narcotics.
In Enugu State, anti-narcotics officers on patrol along the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway intercepted a commercial bus travelling to Taraba State on May 28.
A search of the vehicle uncovered 22,000 capsules of tramadol, 100 ampoules of pentazocine and 200 grams of bromazepam. One suspect, identified as James Maigari Wisdom, was taken into custody.
The agency also stated that its nationwide anti-drug advocacy campaign remained active, with officers engaging schools, religious centres, workplaces and local communities through sensitisation programmes designed to discourage drug abuse.
Reacting to the recent successes, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Buba Marwa (retd.), commended officers of the Kaduna, Niger and Enugu state commands, as well as personnel of the Directorate of Operations and General Investigation, for their commitment and professionalism.
Marwa urged operatives across the country to sustain the momentum in the fight against drug trafficking while continuing public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing substance abuse and its harmful effects on society.
