The Lagos State Government has announced a restriction on the transportation of goods and heavy luggage on all regulated public transport buses operating within the state.
The directive is set to take effect from June 1, 2026.
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) made the announcement in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi.

According to LAMATA, the decision was prompted by increasing complaints from passengers and operational difficulties caused by the use of public buses for conveying bulky items, which has affected comfort, safety, and overall service efficiency.
The agency explained that the policy followed a stakeholders’ meeting involving LAMATA and operators of bus services, where it was agreed that the practice should be discontinued and properly restructured to ensure a more efficient and passenger-friendly transport system.
LAMATA warned that enforcement would be strict, stating that any driver found violating the directive by transporting goods during the suspension period would be dismissed and blacklisted from operations.
It further added that any terminal staff or LAMATA personnel found aiding or allowing the loading of goods onto regulated buses would face immediate termination without exception.
“There will be zero tolerance for violations,” the agency emphasised, adding that the government is committed to restoring discipline, safety, and efficiency in the public transport system.
Commuters, operators, and transport officials were urged to comply with the new rule and make alternative arrangements for the movement of goods.
LAMATA reiterated its commitment to providing a safe, reliable, and passenger-centred transport system for residents of Lagos. Lagos prohibits carrying of goods on public buses
