The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally launched activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, opening a 38-day window for political parties to conduct their primaries.
Political parties are expected to hold their primaries for presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and State Houses of Assembly positions between April 23 and May 30, 2026.

The timeframe also allows for the resolution of any disputes that may arise during the primary elections.
In line with INEC regulations, parties must submit their membership registers to the commission at least 21 days before conducting their primaries. The deadline for submitting these registers is May 10, 2026.
This development signals the official start of the electoral process for the 2027 polls, as Nigeria’s 18 registered political parties prepare for their internal contests. Parties are required to adhere strictly to the timetable to avoid sanctions or legal challenges.
INEC has further urged stakeholders to ensure that the primaries are conducted in a transparent, fair, and inclusive manner, with a strong focus on internal democracy. The commission added that additional guidelines and details on monitoring the process will be released in the coming weeks
