Veteran Yoruba Nollywood actor Taiwo Adeshina, widely recognised by his stage name, Elegbeje Ado, has passed away.
News of his death was made public on Tuesday by fellow actor Kunle Afod, who paid an emotional tribute to the late screen veteran on Instagram.
Afod wrote, “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of one of the icons of the Yoruba movie industry, Baba Elegbeje Ado.
“Your remarkable impact on the development of Yoruba filmmaking, your exceptional talent, and the happiness you brought to many will always be remembered.
“Thank you for the unforgettable moments and enduring legacy you leave behind. May God grant your soul eternal rest.
“We extend our sincere sympathies to your family, friends, colleagues, and admirers in this painful period.
“Rest well, Baba Elegbeje Ado. Your legacy will continue to inspire generations.”
Reports indicate that the veteran actor died on Monday, June 29, following a brief illness. However, the exact circumstances surrounding his death could not be independently confirmed.
During a career that spanned more than 20 years, Adeshina became a familiar face in Yoruba cinema, earning acclaim for his portrayal of kings, village chiefs, elders, and other traditional figures deeply rooted in Yoruba culture.
His popular nickname, “Elegbeje Ado,” originated from one of his most memorable movie roles, a performance that became closely associated with his identity and endeared him to fans of Yoruba films.
Away from the screen, Adeshina also served as a Christian minister, successfully balancing his acting career with his pastoral responsibilities throughout his life.
