At least 17 members of the House of Representatives have switched allegiance from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
The defections were officially disclosed during Tuesday’s plenary in the Green Chamber by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu.

The lawmakers attributed their departure to “lingering internal crises” within the party.
Those who joined the NDC include Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian Orogbu, Oluwaseyi Sowunmi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukhtar Zakari, George Oluwande, and Munachim Umezuruike. Others are Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene, Murphy Omroruyi, and Abdulhakeem Ado.
The move is part of a broader trend of political reshuffling tied to ongoing disputes and structural disagreements within the ADC, which some stakeholders say have weakened party unity.
Notable political figures such as Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso have also recently aligned with the NDC. Reports suggest their decision was aimed at sidestepping internal party tensions and building a more cohesive platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement, Obi said his decision came after “careful reflection” on the country’s condition and the need to make more meaningful contributions to national progress, emphasizing that his move was neither driven by personal ambition nor dissatisfaction.
He added that the current challenges facing the nation demand focused leadership and fewer distractions within political parties.
In the same vein, Kwankwaso and Obi were said to have encouraged their supporters to place national interest above internal conflicts and legal battles, urging unity within the new political fold.
