Manchester City have put an end to speculation surrounding Josko Gvardiol’s future by signing the Croatian defender to a new five-year contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2031. The extension reflects the club’s determination to retain one of its most influential defenders despite growing interest from Real Madrid.
In recent weeks, Gvardiol had been linked with a possible switch to the Spanish giants. Reports from Spanish outlet AS claimed that the 24-year-old had been presented to Real Madrid, who have long admired his composure on the ball, tactical intelligence, and defensive quality. However, City quickly moved to remove any uncertainty by reaching an agreement on a new long-term deal.

The club officially announced that Gvardiol had committed his future with a contract extension that will see him remain in Manchester through the summer of 2031.
Since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2023, the Croatia international has developed into one of Europe’s top defenders. His consistency, versatility, and ability to excel in multiple defensive roles have made him an essential part of City’s back line.
Although naturally a central defender, Gvardiol has also impressed at left-back, delivering strong performances whenever called upon. Across 122 appearances for Manchester City, he has scored 13 goals, highlighting his ability to contribute in attack as well as in defense.
His time at the club has already been filled with success, helping City lift six major trophies: the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and Community Shield.
On the international stage, Gvardiol remains a key figure for Croatia. He has earned 52 senior caps and has represented his country at the FIFA World Cup.
Gvardiol: Staying at City Was an Easy Decision
Speaking after signing the new agreement, Gvardiol admitted that extending his stay was an obvious choice from the moment discussions began.
“As soon as I heard that Manchester City wanted to extend my contract, I knew immediately that this was where I wanted to stay,” he said. “The supporters have welcomed me from my first day, and the club gives every player everything needed to succeed. For me, there is no better place to play football.”
The Croatian also expressed his appreciation for the support he has received since arriving in England.
“I’ve experienced incredible respect and affection during my time here, and I’m truly grateful for that. I never take it for granted. We have an outstanding squad filled with talented young players, and I’m confident we can achieve even greater success together in the years ahead.”
Hugo Viana Praises Defender’s Importance
Manchester City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, emphasized the club’s commitment to keeping its top performers and described Gvardiol as one of the world’s elite defenders.
“Josko is someone we value enormously,” Viana said. “Despite his age, he already ranks among the finest defenders in world football. His professionalism, dedication, and quality make him a player we wanted to secure for the long term, so we’re delighted he has committed his future to Manchester City.”
Viana also highlighted the defender’s versatility and overall impact.
“He possesses all the qualities we look for in a defender. He is quick, powerful, comfortable playing in different positions, and contributes significantly going forward. He is truly an exceptional footballer.”
Concluding his remarks, Viana added: “Beyond his footballing ability, Josko is an outstanding person with an excellent attitude and relentless desire to improve. Those qualities perfectly match the values of this club, and we’re excited to see him continue developing over the coming years.”
