President Bola Tinubu has approved the transformation of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa, as part of efforts to strengthen technical education and develop skilled manpower for Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, the decision reflects the administration’s commitment to expanding technical education, building human capital, and unlocking the country’s vast mineral resources.

The approval followed a proposal by Senator Ahmed Aliyu, who represents Nasarawa West Senatorial District. The lawmaker advocated for the establishment of a specialised university that would take advantage of Nasarawa State’s rich solid mineral deposits while supporting Nigeria’s broader industrialisation drive.
Under the presidential directive, the new institution will focus on delivering high-quality teaching, research, and innovation in mining, engineering, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing, and emerging technologies. It is also expected to produce highly skilled professionals capable of promoting value addition, technological innovation, and the sustainable development of Nigeria’s mineral resources.
According to the statement, the move aligns with the objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda by ensuring that the country’s higher education system is better positioned to meet national development goals through specialised institutions tailored to key sectors of the economy.
President Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and other relevant agencies to begin the legal and administrative processes required to complete the institution’s transition.
The President also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in education, describing it as a vital tool for driving economic growth, innovation, employment opportunities, and long-term national development.
