The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has recovered more than 2.2 tonnes of various illicit drugs across Bauchi State over the past seven months.
During the same period, the agency arrested 270 suspected drug offenders and destroyed an illegal cannabis plantation as part of its ongoing anti-drug operations.

The State Commander of Narcotics, Mr. Hassan Yaqub, disclosed this while speaking at an event marking the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
This year’s commemoration is themed: “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses.”
Yaqub explained that the seized narcotics, weighing 2,248.9 kilogrammes, included cannabis sativa, methamphetamine, rohypnol, crack cocaine, tramadol, codeine syrup and other prohibited substances.
He also revealed that NDLEA operatives uncovered and destroyed a cannabis farm in Bogoro Local Government Area, where one suspect was arrested in connection with the plantation.
According to the commander, the agency has filed 105 fresh cases before the courts, secured 79 convictions, while 74 other cases remain pending. He added that 12 suspects are currently in custody awaiting the conclusion of legal proceedings.
On rehabilitation efforts, Yaqub said 67 individuals battling drug dependence had successfully completed treatment and were discharged, while another 12 are presently undergoing rehabilitation at the agency’s treatment centre.
“Our care, treatment and rehabilitation unit remains committed to transforming the lives of people affected by drug dependence and helping them return to society as responsible and productive citizens,” he said.
Highlighting the agency’s public awareness campaign, Yaqub disclosed that more than 300 sensitisation programmes had been organised under the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative, reaching an estimated 1.5 million residents with messages on the dangers of substance abuse.
He called on universities, colleges and other educational institutions to establish drug-free clubs as part of efforts to strengthen the campaign against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking across the state.
Yaqub also expressed appreciation to the Bauchi State Government, traditional and religious leaders, as well as other stakeholders, for their continued support, reaffirming the agency’s determination to eliminate drug abuse and illegal drug trafficking in the state.
