Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), operating under Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), have successfully freed 47 individuals, predominantly women and children, from an Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) stronghold located in Kangarwa, within Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The development was disclosed in a statement released on Tuesday in Maiduguri by the Acting Military Information Officer of OPHK, Capt. Mohammed Goni.

According to Goni, the rescue followed a series of sustained military offensives targeting ISWAP bases around the Lake Chad region.
He explained that coordinated land and air operations exerted significant pressure on the insurgents, forcing them to flee their positions and creating an opportunity for the captives to regain their freedom after an extended period in detention.
“The Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, has recorded another major humanitarian achievement with the rescue of more than 47 civilians, mainly women and children, who had been held by ISWAP fighters in Kangarwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
“This success was achieved through persistent and intensified operations conducted by OPHK troops against terrorist enclaves in the Lake Chad area.
“The continuous ground and aerial assaults disrupted the terrorists’ activities and compelled them to abandon their camps, allowing the victims to escape from captivity,” he stated.
Goni further revealed that the rescued individuals are receiving medical care at a secure facility, while efforts are underway to provide them with essential humanitarian support.
He noted that relevant government and humanitarian agencies are working alongside the military to ensure the victims undergo rehabilitation and are successfully reintegrated into their communities.
The spokesman said the rescue highlights Operation Hadin Kai’s dedication to safeguarding civilians while maintaining pressure on terrorist groups operating in the North-East.
He also reiterated the Theatre Command’s determination to sustain offensive actions aimed at dismantling the remaining ISWAP networks and restoring peace, security, and normalcy across the region.
In recent months, military operations across the Lake Chad Basin and the Sambisa Forest corridor have intensified, resulting in the rescue of numerous hostages, the recovery of arms and ammunition, and the elimination of several insurgents.
