Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has described his private meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday as insightful and forward-looking, noting that discussions centred on Nigeria’s future.
Obi, who led a delegation of prominent South-East leaders to Jonathan’s residence, said the visit was part of ongoing consultations with key stakeholders ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Writing on X after the meeting, he said, “Our conversation was candid and reflective, focusing on the urgent need to reposition Nigeria towards unity, security, stability, productivity, and inclusive governance.”
He stressed that the country’s current challenges demand collaboration among leaders across regions.
“At a time when Nigeria faces economic strain, increasing insecurity, and widening social divides, it is essential for leaders from different parts of the country to come together, engage, and act in the collective interest of the people,” he said.
Obi added that the kind of leadership Nigeria needs must be driven by competence and service rather than personal ambition.
“Our nation requires leadership defined by character, capacity, competence, and compassion—not self-interest. Governance should be about creating value, not merely sharing limited resources,” he stated.
He also called for a shift in Nigeria’s economic approach, advocating a transition from a consumption-driven system to a production-based economy that maximises the country’s human and natural resources.
Looking ahead, Obi described the 2027 elections as a crucial turning point for the nation.
“The 2027 polls should not be viewed as just another election, but as a vital opportunity to redirect the course of our country.
“It must focus on the future of the Nigerian child who deserves quality education, the entrepreneur seeking an enabling environment, and citizens yearning for security and effective governance,” he said.
The meeting was attended by Igbo elders, South-East senators of the African Democratic Congress, and other political allies.
