The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the decision followed a meeting between the Commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners held on Friday in Abuja, where the proposed exercise was discussed.
The revalidation exercise was intended to update Nigeria’s voter register by verifying existing records, correcting errors in personal details, removing duplicate and ineligible entries, and allowing voters to update their information.
INEC described the exercise as essential to maintaining an accurate and credible National Register of Voters.
Although no reason was given for the postponement, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections.
Part of the statement read:
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) met with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Friday, April 10, 2026, during which several issues were considered, including the proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise.
“After due deliberation, the Commission resolved to defer the exercise until after the 2027 general elections.
“The voter revalidation exercise remains a vital part of the Commission’s responsibility to maintain an up-to-date and credible National Register of Voters. It is designed to verify and review voter records, ensure the accuracy of personal data, remove duplicate and ineligible entries, and enhance the overall integrity of the register. It also provides registered voters the opportunity to confirm and update their details where necessary.
“INEC remains committed to delivering free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections.”
